As we ring in 2014 one of the more common questions that employee’s may have will be around their vacation pay. As a manager, supervisor, employee or owner it can be hard to justify taking time off work for vacation. Knowing that your co-workers will be working that much harder while you are away can make the guilt too much to take. Some of the more common reasons people do not take their vacation is a fear that no one can handle their workload, worried what the boss will say, the company is too busy, not enough time… it goes on and on. I had an employee ask me the other day what happens to their vacation pay if they do not take time off. Now some offices have the ”use it or lose it” mentality, while others may force someone to take the time off and some offices may just let the money accrue. Whatever the situation in your office, taking a vacation is good for you.
It is important to make sure that your employees are taking their vacation time each year. One of the easiest ways to make sure that they are comfortable taking the time off is if you do as well. Showing that you are comfortable with the ability of the team to handle things while you are away allows them to see that the team can survive while they are away as well. There are more serious reasons why you should ensure that vacation time is used up each year. Not utilizing this time away to recharge and relax can lead to increased stress levels, burnout, physical and mental health issues, disengaged employees and turnover. Any one of those listed is bad for business.
Some things to remember:
In Alberta each employee is entitled to at least 2 weeks of vacation (10 days) after one year of employment. It is a benefit that they are entitled to and frankly it is better for the business if they take the time off. The creativity and productivity of employees who regularly take the time off will increase, as does the general attitude of the person.
If you have a person who just does not want to take a full week or two off, then offer them other alternatives. Maybe they can take a Friday off every month to have an extended weekend. Find out what motivates that person outside of work and use that to encourage them to take the time for themselves.
