Things have been getting very busy at the HireSuccess Staffing office these days! Activity is increasing and new jobs are coming in daily. It certainly seems like the employment market is heating up once again, and we welcome its return.
The past couple of years have been trying for everyone! I have often heard people refer to us as living in the “Alberta Bubble”. While we may not have been hit as hard as other provinces or countries, we still had our share of struggles. Employers, employees and job searchers alike, we have all weathered some tough times since the economy started to struggle in 2009. Many of us have been through layoffs, downsizing, mergers and changes in our job titles and responsibilities. We have seen the market grow and contract and now begin to grow again. Many of the people that left Alberta when they were laid off are starting to return. As I mentioned, it is a welcome return to the past.
It is interesting to me that 5 years ago the forecast for employment in Alberta was that we would be short over 100,000 workers in 2014. That number still exists; we are just a couple of years delayed in reaching it. As the economy starts to heat back up, things are only going to get more interesting! Alberta has hit what is considered to be a balance between those looking for work and the jobs available to fill them. A 5% unemployment rate. How will employers deal with the demand for finding and hiring new staff? How will job searchers ensure that they are placing themselves in the best possible position for their future?
I have been out to several business functions in the past couple of weeks. In almost every conversation, I find myself talking about the economy and the increasing employment demands. Many small business owners are curious about certain parts of the recruitment and hiring process. As well, often when I am talking to job searchers they are looking for tips to finding the perfect job. In my 11+ years working in the staffing industry, I have dealt with thousands of employees and employers in almost any situation and industry you can think of. As I shared my experience in these conversations, it got me thinking about how I could better share my knowledge to a larger audience. It was for this reason that I decided to begin this blog as a way to share some of the understanding that I have gained in my dealings with the world of human resources.
Each week, I will strive to provide insight, answers and tips to both employers and job searchers. My hope is that I will be able to reach as many people as possible and that the information that I provide will help each of them achieve the success they are looking for. Be that in hiring their ideal employee or finding their dream job. As the economy starts to regain its footing and return back to where it was 4 years ago, we will see the same issues we did back then. How will employers retain the staff they have and attract the high quality employees their businesses need to succeed and grow? How will employees make sure that they have the position that works best for them? If the position does not fit them, how will they find their dream job? These are great questions, and I truly look forward to exploring them together.
How have the changes in the economy affected your employment over the past three years?
